Conflict Counselling:
Support and Advisory Services for Students

This website provides you with an initial overview of the people and advisory services you can contact in cases of conflict.

All the counselling and advisory services listed here work together closely to provide you with the best possible support.

You can consult the staff of the Central Student Advisory Services (website in German) as your first point of contact for all study-related questions and problems. With your consent, they will refer you to the appropriate service offices and contact persons as needed. Of course, you can also directly contact the services and people listed below.

The counselling and advisory services are available in English as needed, even though some of the websites are only available in German.

Study Organisation (all degree programmes)

Examples:

  • I cannot meet my deadlines - my instructor cannot help me.
  • I am having problems with the organisation of my studies: there are course scheduling conflicts, courses are not offered frequently enough, or it is not possible for me to register for them.
  • I have a conflict with my instructor that is affecting my studies.
  • I am having problems getting course and examination credit approved.

Discrimination

Examples:

  • I am being ostracised on account of my ethnic origin, my religion, or my ideology.
  • I am experiencing discrimination based on my gender, sexual identity or any other characteristic deserving of protection.
  • I feel ostracised and believe that this has to do with my sexual orientation.
  • In a seminar, the instructor pressures the participants to share personal experiences with the group.
  • I cannot take part in an examination because of my religious affiliation. I feel that I am being excluded.
  • I am experiencing discrimination because of the colour of my skin.
  • Instructors or students use hurtful or exclusionary language.
  • I am denied the opportunity to participate in an excursion because of chronic illness or disability.

Examples:

  • A fellow student always lurks outside a seminar and engages me in unpleasant conversations.

  • I do not feel comfortable in the presence of a fellow student; the person keeps staring at me in a strange way.
  • The whole seminar group seems to have something against me, they are always whispering and I can't find a presentation group to join.
  • I received an email from my lecturer that is of an overly personal nature.
  • I am supposed to go to my instructor's home to discuss the final paper. Is this common practice?
