Dr Stefanie Schmitt and Dr Christoph Brielmaier at the 8th Lindau Nobel Meeting in Economic Sciences
Dr Stefanie Schmitt (Lehrstuhl für VWL, insb. Finanzwissenschaft) and Dr Christoph Brielmaier (Lehrstuhl für BWL, insbesondere Strategie und Organisation) participated in one of the world’s most prestigious scientific conferences for young researchers – the Lindau Nobel Meeting in Economic Sciences.
The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, established in 1951, provide a unique platform for dialogue between Nobel Laureates and young researchers. Different disciplines take center stage each year. From August 25 to 30, 2025, 21 Nobel Laureates and 279 outstanding young researchers from around the world (56 nationalities, 47 countries of institutions) met in Lindau to exchange ideas on current economic research and global challenges. Among the participating Nobel Laureates were last year’s laureate Simon H. Johnson and Joseph Stiglitz, who advised several U.S. presidents.
The program includes lectures, panel discussions, Laureate Lunches, and Science Walks. A particular highlight of this year’s meeting was the attendance of José Manuel Barroso (Former Prime Minister of the Portuguese Republic and former President of the European Commission, Portugal) and of Mario Draghi (Former Prime Minister of the Italian Republic and former President of the European Central Bank, Italy).
The Lindau Meetings offer young researchers a special opportunity to engage with Nobel Laureates on an informal walk or during an informal lunch or dinner.
Dr Stefanie Schmitt joined an informal lunch and a lively discussion with Nobel Laureate Jean Tirole, who won the Prize for advancing our understanding of market power and regulation. During the Science Picnic and the subsequent walk around Mainau Island, Dr Stefanie Schmitt also had the opportunity to discuss global challenges with Nobel Laureate Paul Romer, fromer chief economist of the World Bank.
Dr Christoph Brielmaier had lunch with Nobel Laureate Steven Chu, Former Scretary of Energy under the Obama Administration. In addition, Dr Christoph Brielmaier spent the Bavarian evening discussing global issues with David Beasley, who accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the World Food Programme as its executive director.
